ONE LAST is a psychological suspense story told in alternating narratives. In one thread, we are offered an inside look into the filming of a reality TV show, where 12 contestants of varying talent are pitted against one another in a remote New England forest to determine who has the best survival skills. In another thread, we come to know one of those contestants much more intimately as she sets out alone, a few weeks into the future, to continue the competition for her solo challenge. But as her emotional and physical reserves dwindle, her ability to parse the charade will either be her triumph or her undoing. Sophisticated and provocative, ONE LAST is a novel that forces us to confront the role that media plays in our perception of what is real—how readily we cast our judgments, and how easily we are all manipulated.

Ali Oliva is a recent graduate of Yale University as well as The New School MFA program, where her most influential class by far was Experimental Literature, taught by Shelley Jackson. In between her degrees, Oliva worked as a docent for the Prospect Park Zoo (much like her heroine) and she has taken several wilderness survival courses, including an extended course at the famous Boulder Outdoor Survival School (BOSS). ONE LAST is her first novel.
