THE INKLING is a superbly entertaining middle-grade novel about a sixth grader who discovers an ink blot with a mind of its own! When Ethan’s sixth grade English class gets assigned to make their own graphic novels, his group assumes that since his dad is the famous comic artist Peter Rylance, Ethan is the obvious choice to do the artwork. But they couldn’t be more wrong. Ethan can’t draw for beans, and ever since his mother died, his dad hasn’t made good on any of his promises to help him develop his art skills—or done much of anything that normal parents do. Then Ethan discovers a fluid blot of ink with a mind of its own in his father’s studio, and suddenly he has all the help he needs to create spreads of detailed, mind-blowing illustrations that will earn him an A, plus the respect of his friends. But when a suspicious classmate discovers Ethan’s secret, and an experimental second blot threatens to overtake Inkling and usurp Peter’s job as an artist, Ethan must decide between what is easy and what is right.
