Donna Gephart’s award–winning middle–grade novels include Lily and Dunkin, Death by Toilet Paper, How to Survive Middle School and others. She’s worked as an editor at a greeting card company, a creative writing teacher at a high school, and as an indie bookseller. She lives in South Jersey with her family and her canine office assistant, Benji, a sweet retriever mix.

Lori Haskins Houran is a former children’s book editor and the author of more than 55 books for kids, including Next to You, a School Library Journal Best Picture Book; the Kirkus–starred Button Your Buttons; and Close Your Eyes, which SLJ called “a perfect bedtime work, filled with sly humor.” She lives on the North Shore of Massachusetts with her husband, four boys, and two rascally rescue dogs.

Josh Cleland is an illustrator working out of his home studio just outside of Portland, Oregon, where he resides with his wife, Rayna, and creative director/dog, Newman. Some of his recent illustrated children’s books include Fridge–opolis, The End, Chomp Chomp Dino, New York, Go!, Trick–or–Treat Songs, and Portland Baby. His work can also be found in various children’s magazines including Highlights and Storytime, as well as as greeting cards, games, and more.

Dan Santat is the New York Times bestselling author of more than 100 books for children, including Are We There Yet, After the Fall, and The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend, for which he won the Caldecott Medal. He lives in Southern California with his wife, two kids, and many, many pets.

After gaining her doctorate at the University of Southampton in England she was responsible for marine biological stations on the Maldives and sailed 9,500 kilometres across the Atlantic from the Caribbean to the Mediterranean in order to draw attention to the litter pollution of the oceans. She gives lectures and holds seminars on subjects connected with marine biology. Her previous book The Blue Wonder was translated into several languages.

Researching her articles, films, scripts, and 33 books, National Book Award finalist Sy Montgomery has scuba-dived with sharks, cuddled with octopuses, slept next to a mother hippo and her baby, and been undressed by a wild orangutan. To inform this book, she and artist Matt Patterson helped rescue cold-stunned sea turtles on Cape Cod, raised baby painted turtles for release into the wild, and provided physical therapy for an injured, 42-pound wild snapping turtle named Fire Chief. They still regularly patrol a nesting site for native New England turtles against predators and volunteer at Turtle Rescue League in southern Massachusetts.
