THE DARK IN HER VEINS de M.K. Lobb

From critically acclaimed, UK bestselling author M.K. Lobb comes a noir romantic fantasy set in a world in which sin is a fatal disease, and the rich hire the poor to carry out their basest instincts―until the forbidden romance between a sinner and a mysterious figure threatens to destroy everything.

In the gritty, glittering city of Valestadt, every crime—from the smallest infraction to the largest atrocity—leaves its mark in the form of Bloodrot, a wasting disease that slowly eats away at its host. For the poor, sinning is a death sentence. For the rich, it’s just another expensive pastime. After all, anyone can be bought.

Talin Keller is a sinner. She has learned to rely on nothing and no one—traits that have served her well as right-hand woman to the holiest man in the city, the Prophet. Talin’s job is to get her hands dirty so the Prophet’s can stay clean. It’s a job she’s frighteningly good at, and judging by her rapidly advancing Bloodrot, it might also be her last. But when a routine assignment puts Talin on a collision course with the Prophet’s most hated enemy, a shadowy underworld figure known as “the Warden,” she begins to see a future for herself that doesn’t involve a body bag. If she can get close enough to the Warden, she can trade his capture for her own freedom.

The closer Talin gets to the Warden, though, the more she finds herself falling for his sharp edges and twisted sense of justice. And as the lines between good and evil—between saint and sinner, between lover and enemy—begin to blur, Talin finds herself at the center of a conflict that could destroy everything.

Valerie Gracey never wanted the crown, but as the eldest daughter of a scheming duke, she doesn’t make the plans — she survives them. But survival seems impossible when she’s summoned to marry Crown Prince Aleksander: a man duty-bound to execute her if he discovers her forbidden inherited magic.

Valerie knows a single misstep means death not just for her, but her siblings too, so she resolves to win the prince’s heart. Surely a man who loves her is less likely to want her dead.

But ignoring her magic is not easy, and ignoring the Prince’s rebellious brother is even harder.

Alyssa Pickering has been obsessed with stories for as long as she can remember. When she wasn’t reading fantasy books, she was writing them—especially ones filled with magic. After a brief academic detour to earn a BS in Human Development and an MA in Family and Community Services, she remembered her preference for imaginary worlds and began drafting her debut novel.

Aviva has trained all her life to become an Ailier, a military officer chosen to ride one of the great winged horses known as the Thousand. The only thing more important to her is being worthy of the love of the court’s Princess, heir to the Vridan nation – one of the richest families in the world, thanks to their seemingly unlimited stores of lustre, the natural substance that helps the family perform feats of magic to keep them in power. When Aviva connects with one of the Thousand on her first try, she and Leyla officially become betrothed. All her wildest dreams are made real.

Her happiness is ripped away when she is arrested for a crime she didn’t commit – being a ‘Usurper’ who uses soul-possession magic – and hauled to a remote prison to have her spirit broken. Trapped on the island, guarded by brutal guards, Aviva knows that she is innocent. They know she is innocent – but they torture her anyway, breaking her spirit. Meanwhile, Leyla is reeling from the news that her beloved committed such a heinous crime. But as she begins to investigate she realises that there is more to the story than she first thought, casting doubt on everything she believed.

As the two are set on a collision path – can love prevail in the face of revenge?

To free her cousin from an indentured contract, Katrien agrees to fulfill their lord’s bargain with the fabled “Redwood Man.” Three maids before her have posed as his stepdaughter, Lady Zaviera, and met this lord of the forest as promised. But Katrien means to be the first to fool him—and live. Impersonating a lady is no easy feat, especially one as beautiful and aloof as Zaviera. With one month before she’s sent off, Katrien is put through endless lessons, even as the Redwood Man’s suffocating vines overtake the manor and threaten its staff. Zaviera takes a special interest in her training, and their shared interests grow into shared affections. But the Redwood Man awaits his prize. Caught between duty and desire, her future and her past, Katrien must navigate a tricky bargain—or risk failing those she holds dearest.

Sascia has always loved the Dark. Six years ago, when the world she knew collided with the world of the Dark, she found it thrilling rather than terrifying. Now, she spends her days studying Darkcreatures or seeking them out in the shadows where they thrive.

Then, one day, she—impossibly—pulls a person from the Dark. A person who shouldn’t exist. And they’re here to kill her. Nugau, the heir to the Darkworld, claims to be delivering a sentence for Sascia’s betrayal in a battle she’s never heard of, in a war that hasn’t happened.

Sascia escapes with her life—barely. But tensions are brewing between her world and the Dark, and it’s not long before she discovers that she and Nugau are bound together by forces they don’t understand. As they grow closer, crossing worlds and timelines, they must find a way to fight for peace—and for each other.
