Voici un extrait de la critique que RT Book Reviews lui a consacrée : “Modesitt is known for the incredibly detailed worlds he builds, and the ability to take those worlds through generations to show the growth and development of his characters. Cyador’s Heirs does not disappoint, building on the stories of the grandchildren of the great matriarch in the Recluse saga from childhood to early adulthood. Lerial is a fully realized character who is highly sympathetic to the reader, and has a depth of thought and maturity that will be immediately recognizable to Modesitt fans.”

The new novel in the bestselling epic fantasy series, Saga of Recluce, and the direct sequel to CYADOR’S HEIR

HERITAGE OF CYADOR
by L. E. Modesitt Jr.
Tor Books, November 2014

heritage of cyadorScarcely a year after the events of Cyador’s Heirs, Lerial uses his mastery of Order and Chaos, the competing natural forces that shape his world and define the magic that exists within it, to utterly destroy an Afritan military force crossing into Cigoerne.
Five years later, Lerial, now an overcaptain and a field commander of Cigoerne’s Mirror Lancers, must lead three companies of troops into Afrit on a mission of mutual interest: neighboring Heldya is threatening to invade Afrit, and if that nation falls, Cigoerne is certain to be next.
The mission is both delicate and dangerous; Lerial’s value in the effort to repelling Heldya is undeniable, but his troubled history against Afrit may reopen old wounds that will never truly heal.

Chockstone Pictures acquiert les droits cinéma pour ALL THE OLD KNIVES de Olen Steinhauer

ALL THE OLD KNIVES sera publié par Minotaur au printemps 2015.

THE CAIRO AFFAIR

An Amazon book of the month, best of the month of the Apple iBookstore and Pop Sugar

“Elaborate, sophisticated spy tale, a long, twisty road full of cleverly placed potholes and unexpected turns.” – The New York Times

“Combined with spot-on characters and smooth plotting, his novels, including this one, favor what feels like messy authenticity over Hollywood-style Bond adventures.” CS Monitor

« Steinhauer has once again produced an extremely well-constructed page-turner, this time set in Egypt during the initial Libyan uprising. » Indie Next

« An elegant, elaborate clockwork of mystery and deception that should draw readers in and keep them on tenterhooks as they try to figure out what is really making it all tick. … One marvels at the intricacy of its imagination and the elegance of its maker’s craftsmanship. » – Publishers Weekly

“A genuine page turner—cleverly conceived and intricately plotted. Steinhauer juggles political and personal loyalties with a master storyteller’s sleight of hand.”—Joseph Kanon

“The Cairo Affair is the espionage novel at its best, packed with betrayals, double-crosses, hidden agendas, moral conflicts, international relations, and even a delectable double-entendre of a title.”—Chris Pavone

Minutes after Sophie Kohl confesses to her husband Emmett, a mid-level diplomat at the American embassy in Hungary, that she had an affair six months ago while they were in Cairo, he is shot and killed.  Stan Bertolli, a Cairo-based CIA agent, has fielded his share of midnight calls. But his heart skips a beat when, this time, he hears the voice of the only woman he ever truly loved, calling to ask why her husband has been assassinated.  Omar Halawi has worked in Egyptian intelligence for years, and he knows how to play the game. But the murder of a diplomat in Hungary has ripple effects even back in Cairo, and Omar must follow the fall-out wherever it leads.  American analyst Jibril Aziz knows more about Stumbler, a covert operation rejected by the CIA years ago, than anyone. Sowhen it appears someone else has obtained a copy of the blueprints, Jibril knows better than almost anyone the danger it represents. . As these players converge in Cairo, Olen Steinhauer’s masterful manipulations slowly craft a portrait of a marriage, a jigsaw puzzle of loyalty and betrayal, against a dangerous world where allegiances are never clear and outcomes are never guaranteed.

Drawing on startling new evidence from the mapping of the genome, an explosive new account of the genetic basis of race and its role in the human story

A TROUBLESOME INHERITANCE: GENES, RACE AND HUMAN HISTORY
by Nicholas Wade
Penguin Press (USA & Canada), May 2014

“It is hard to convey how rich this book is….The book is a delight to read—conversational and lucid. And it will trigger an intellectual explosion the likes of which we haven’t seen for a few decades….At the heart of the book, stated quietly but with command of the technical literature, is a bombshell….So one way or another, A Troublesome Inheritance will be historic. Its proper reception would mean enduring fame. » —The Wall Street Journal

atroublesomeFew ideas have been more toxic or harmful, or have been used for worse ends, than the idea of the biological reality of race, and with it the idea that humans of different races are biologically different from each other. But Nicholas Wade, inconvenient as it may be, believes that there is truth in this view. Race is inherently not a bright-line distinction; by definition it means that the more human populations are kept apart from each other and for longer periods of time, the more they will evolve their own distinct, separate traits under the selective pressure known as Darwinian evolution. Wade’s most controversial claims involve the genetic basis of human social habits, such as the genetic basis for the tendency to be more or less violent. Inevitably such assertions get caught up in questions of “better” and “worse,” which are pernicious; Wade argues the more subtle point that some traits are more adaptive for some specific environments than others and that science needs to set its course for the truth, come what may, taboos or no. With brave, scrupulous care and lucidity, Wade forays into this scientific minefield and endeavors to arrive at a coherent summary of what the new genetic science does and does not tell us about race and human history. This will not be the final word on the subject, but it will begin a mighty and in some respects overdue conversation.

FLASH BOYS: A WALL STREET REVOLT

Michael Lewis

WW Norton, March 31st 2014

If you still imagine Wall Street as a bunch of alpha males standing on trading floor and shouting at each other…you need to forget that image.

That world is dead. Now, the world’s money is traded by computer code, inside black boxes in heavily guarded buildings. Even the experts entrusted with your money don’t know what’s happening to it. And the very few who do aren’t about to tell – because they’re making a killing.  This is a market that’s rigged, out of control and out of sight; a market in which the chief need is for speed; and in which traders would do anything to gain a microsecond. Blink, and you’ll miss it.

In FLASH BOYS, Michael Lewis tells the explosive story of how one group of ingenious oddballs and misfits set out to expose what was going on. It’s the story of what it’s like to declare war on some of the richest and most powerful people in the world. It’s about taking on an entire system. And it’s about the madness that has taken hold of the financial markets today. And at its center a firm called IEX that has created a separate exchange where everyone — fast or super fast — is safe to trade.  And the story is told with Michael Lewis’s usual incredible flair best described by Malcolm Gladwell: “I read Michael Lewis for the same reason I watch Tiger Woods. I’ll never play like that. But it’s good to be reminded every now and again what genius looks like.”

Rights have already been sold in the UK (Penguin) and Germany (Campus).

A richly told thriller about the dark side of the rare book world.

THE FORGERS

Bradford Morrow

Mysterious Press, November 2014

“a fine writer with an extraordinary feel for the physicality of fiction” (Boston Globe)

“one of America’s major literary voices” (Publishers Weekly)

The rare book world is stunned when a reclusive collector, Adam Diehl, is found on the floor of his Montauk home: hands severed, surrounded by valuable inscribed books and original manuscripts that have been vandalized beyond repair. Adam’s sister, Meghan, and her lover – Will, a convicted if unrepenting literary forger – struggle to come to terms with the seemingly incomprehensible murder. But when Will begins receiving threatening letters written in the handwriting of long-dead authors, from someone who knows secrets about Adam’s death and Will’s past, he understands his own life is also on the line and attempts to forge a new beginning for himself and Meg. In THE FORGERS, Morrow reveals the passion that drives collectors to the razor-sharp edge of morality, brilliantly confronting the hubris and mortal danger of rewriting history with a fraudulent pen.

THE FORGERS is already receiving advance praise: Nicholas Basbanes, author of A Gentle Madness and On Paper, has raved, “With The Forgers, Bradford Morrow has masterfully combined an exquisitely thickening plot, an informed appreciation of the antiquarian book world, and a deep understanding of what makes the obsessive people who inhabit this quirky community do the sort of impassioned things they sometimes do, up to and including the commission of horrific crimes… This is a bibliomystery you will want to inhale in one sitting.
