With every audacious announcement, interest in Elon Musk and Tesla increases. Just as there was huge demand for another book about Steve Jobs after Walter Isaacson’s bestselling biography, so there will be demand for Insane Mode, even in the wake of Ashlee Vance’s recent bestseller and Musk’s own future-oriented book. Elon Musk, like Thomas Edison before him, has a keen understanding that his success will depend not just on his genius as an inventor, but also on his ability to form a commanding narrative: to craft, control, and compel people to believe in the story of a world that does not yet exist.

Hamish McKenzie is an international journalist and former lead writer for Tesla Motors. In recent years, he was also a reporter for the tech blog PandoDaily, where he covered tech media, politics, and international startups, and he is the author of “Beta China: The Dawn of an Innovation Generation”.  Formerly, he was a freelancer writing features for the Listener, New Zealand’s leading current affairs and arts magazine, and the South China Morning Post, Hong Kong’s leading English-language newspaper. His work has also appeared in a wide range of publications in the UK, the US, Australia, and Canada, including the Guardian, Globe and Mail, and Toronto Star, and helped launch Time Out Hong Kong. He has reported from Asia, Australasia, North America, and Europe, and he has interviewed many leading figures from the worlds of tech, academia, and entertainment, including Sting, John Cleese, Robert Smith, Bret McKenzie, Billy Corgan, Wayne Coyne, Ndaba Mandela, and Cory Booker.

What he has created has now become, in the words of The New York Times: « …an instant publishing phenomenon. » HONY has been featured in The Times, The Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Entertainment Weekly, he has appeared on Nightline, CBS This Morning, Fox and Friends, has been a « person of the week » on the ABC Nightly News and a Time Magazine « 30 under 30 » who have changed the world.

“This is a novel to enjoy, to cherish, and to revisit many times. Into its brief span Jenny Erpenbeck packs a century of upheaval, always rooted in the chances and choices of one woman’s life. It is both written and translated with an almost uncanny beauty, which grows not out of historical abstractions but from the shocks and hopes of everyday life, and from our common quest for peace, home and love. Re-reading this jewel of a book, I came to feel as if both W. G. Sebald and Virginia Woolf would recognise a kindred spirit here.”

An incredible true story

THE INFILTRATOR
My Secret Life Inside the Dirty Banks Behind Pablo Escobar’s Medellin Cartel
by Robert Mazur
Little, Brown and Company, July 2009

Federal Agent Robert Mazur spent five years undercover as a money launderer to the international underworld, gaining access to the zenith of a criminal hierarchy safeguarded by a circle of dirty bankers and businessmen who quietly shape power across the globe. These men and women control multibillion-dollar drug-trafficking empires, running their organizations like public companies. Accountants, attorneys, and financial advisors, their roots run deep in their communities, and they are laundering billions of dollars a year, manipulating complex international finance systems to serve drug lords, corrupt politicians, tax cheats, and terrorists. In 1987, Mazur began infiltrating BCCI, bankers behind the Medellín cartel. He meticulously gathered evidence for years until, during a fake wedding, federal agents arrested over 40 high-ranking criminals, who were all found guilty and sent to prison. Never before told, this is the incredible, true story of how he did it.
